지난 금요일 새벽, 외할아버지께서 임종하셨다. 가끔 노년의 레너드코헨을 보면 나의 외할아버지를 연상하곤 했는데, 혹시 어머니께서 레너드코헨을 좋아하는 이유도 혹시 그런 것이 조금 작용하지 않았을까 생각한다.

77세의 레너드코헨의 올해 발표한 앨범 old idea에서 내가 제일 좋아하는 곡이 바로 이 노래다. 할렐루야만큼의 명곡같은 감동은 없지만 담백하고 솔직한 가사가 끌렸다.

한 사람이 태어나는 것도 쉬운 것이 아니지만, 한 사람이 떠나는 것은 그 보다 몇갑절 힘든 일이다. 그를 알고, 사랑하는 수많은 사람들이 그를 "보내줘야"하기 때문이다. 장례라는 절차가 어찌보면 망자를 떠나보내는 사람들의 상심과 아픔, 그리고 고통을 치유하고 공유하기 위함도 매우 클 것이다.

부모님과 이모, 이모부들은 아직 고창에 남아있다.

돈 한푼을 벌어보고자 서울에서 바삐 움직이는 불경한 외손자는 황망히 올라올 수 밖에 없었다. 하지만, 아직 조금 남은 아픔과 외로움을 달래고자, 목요일 아침 다시 고창으로 내려가려 한다.
